Festive Christmas Table Ideas

Emily LambeChristmas tablecloths for festive dining
Lean into the warmth of the season with a tablescape that feels both festive and comforting. The tablecloth acts as the base to your arrangement, setting the mood and adding an elevated feel.
For instant festive flair, you can’t go wrong with classic Christmas red. Bring a sense of nostalgia to the table with a tartan tablecloth – it’s bold, characterful, and full of charm. If you’d prefer something you’ll use year-round, start with a crisp white tablecloth for a clean, wintry base.
Look for styles in pure cotton or linen as they’re machine washable (a necessity after a big gathering). Get your tablecloth out of the cupboard a few days before Christmas to give it a good steam or iron, eliminating any wrinkles for a smooth finish.
Dish up with Christmas tableware
When it’s time to plate up the big Christmas dinner, you’ll want tableware that does the special day justice. Place settings should feel intentional – stack fine china with bold, decorative side plates, and add gold or matte black cutlery for contrast.
Create new traditions with a set of Christmas plates and bowls you only break out during the festive season. A set of Christmas dishes really brings the table to life with a subtle red stripe and Christmas tree accents.
Decorative serving dishes in ceramic or stoneware can add to the sense of warmth and texture, too. Look for large bowls and trays for canapes, starters and salads, plus small bowls for sauces and nibbles. Don’t forget the all-important gravy boat for that final flourish.
The best glasses for Christmas dinner
When hosting a large number of guests during the festive season, staying stocked up on drinking glasses is a necessity. From tumblers for water and hi ball glasses for soda to wine glasses for red and white, your bar cart will see plenty of activity.
Start with the essentials – a water glass at each place setting and a jug to serve it with. Guests can help themselves throughout the day to stay topped up. Then make sure each guest has a wine glass for a Christmas tipple. Goblet-style glasses work for both red and white, plus they add an effortless rustic charm to the table.
Christmas Day wouldn’t be complete without a celebratory toast. Treat yourself to some bubbly in a slender Champagne flute or elegant coupe glass to get the evening started.
Styling Christmas placemats, coasters and napkins
For an elevated take on festive styling, embrace rich materials, tonal depth and a hint of drama. Set the scene with individual placemats for each guest – a frayed edge or woven design is a great way to add texture.
A good set of napkins are an absolute must when hosting Christmas dinner. Make sure you have one for each guest plus extras for those unexpected spills. Keep it classic with crisp white (you can always bleach these if things get messy) or add warmth with off-white and cream tones.
Coasters are nice to have out during cocktail hour while your guests are enjoying a drink with nibbles and plenty of chats. Lightweight cotton coasters can easily be transported as you mooch from room to room, but these beaded coasters add a bit of glamour to your set-up.
Adding extra festive flair
Add soft metallic accents – think brushed gold candle holders or stone napkin rings – to catch the light without overpowering the space. High-shine accents like polished brass silverware or mirrored trays reflect candlelight and heightens the mood.
A small sprig of festive greenery or a velvet ribbon tied around a napkin adds a thoughtful finishing touch – understated, seasonal, and effortlessly cosy. Keep the centrepiece sculptural – clusters of baubles, metallic foliage or a sleek arrangement of column candles create a look that feels luxe, modern, and well-balanced.
Top tip: set up your table a day or two before so you can spend more time creating memories on the bag day, rather than prepping for dinner.
An extra magical flourish
